Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should we start lessons for our first dance? The earlier the better! We usually recommend starting 3-6 months before your wedding to give yourself enough time, not just to learn the material, but to practice it and be able to do it without thinking (or almost!) Even if you decide to do only one workshop, do it early and practice a lot. As your wedding gets closer, if you feel you need another lesson or class, you've given yourself the extra time to do that.
How long does it take, on average, to learn to dance enough to do a nice first dance? It completely depends on how complicated a dance you want to do, how much time you can devote to practicing outside of your lessons, and what your rate of learning is. Some of our students take just the "Dance-In-A-Day" Workshop and do lots of practice. Others prefer private lessons, taking between 5 to 20 lessons (usually one per week) to prepare. It's all up to you. If you're uncertain, contact us.
Can you choreograph a unique dance for us to our song? Yes we can! We would be happy to design a dance suited specifically to you. You can describe what you are looking to learn, or we can design it completely for you, taking into consideration your individual personalities and style. We also consider your timeline, so your dance can be beautiful AND be learned comfortably in the time you have available.
Help! We have very little time before our wedding! Can we still learn enough to do our first dance well? Yes! You can still learn in a short time to look good dancing at your wedding. If it fits your schedule, you can take a "Dance-In-A-Day" Workshop which covers all you need to do a great first dance in one day! Or, if none of the scheduled workshops fit your time frame, you can take a few private lessons to learn the material.
Can you help us select a song for our first dance? We'd love to! We have a number of suitable romantic songs that we can play for you, or check out our extensive list of First Dance Songs for suggestions. If you have several songs and can't decide, we can demonstrate your options and help you narrow it down.
Can we really learn to "dance in a day"? There is so much to dancing that nobody can learn it all in a lifetime! But you can learn enough in our workshop to do a smooth, attractive first dance with some turns and an entrance and exit. The key is practice! The only way to retain what you've learned is to repeat it many times, and to start practicing soon after the workshop.
How big are the workshops? Workshops range from a minimum of 3 couples to a maximum of 10 couples.
What should we wear? Wear comfortable clothes for moving! The studio atmosphere is casual. Bring or wear shoes with leather soles--they work better for dancing on the wood floors--or bring your wedding shoes (or ones similar to those you'll be wearing at your wedding). You can start to break them in and get accustomed to dancing in them.
My partner and I have different levels of experience. Will this be a problem? Not at all. Your instructor will give individual pointers that suit your specific level of experience (to make it interesting and productive for both of you) while bringing up the less experienced dancer. The ultimate goal is having you dance well together.
What is your refund policy for workshops? We give a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours in advance of your workshop. For a missed or late-cancelled workshop, we will refund the cost less a $20 cancellation fee.
Can we have a workshop with just our family and friends? Yes. We can either design a custom Dance-In-A-Day workshop for you, or you can do several semi-private lessons with your group. Just contact us to work out the details.
Will we be in a private room for private lessons? Probably not. Private lessons are usually held in a large room where another instructor or two is giving a lesson. This system works quite well, since we will not want to play our music at all times. On rare occasions, there may be no other lessons scheduled and you will have the room to yourselves. The busiest times at the studio are weeknights, 6-9pm, so during those hours you will likely see other lessons going on.
If we want to be in a private room for private lessons, can that be arranged? Yes. You will likely need to book your lesson(s) further in advance as private rooms are used frequently for regular group classes and there are fewer slots available, but we will do our best to accommodate your schedule. Depending on what room is booked, there will be an additional surcharge for the lesson(s). Please contact us for details.
